The valve could also be located near the water heater or under the kitchen sink if you have a slab foundation. Here are some tips to prevent your pipes from freezing during winter:
– Insulate pipes in your crawl spaces and attic.
– Use heat tape or heat cables approved by an independent testing organization like Underwriters Laboratories Inc to wrap pipes.
– Seal any air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes using caulk or insulation.
– Disconnect garden hoses before winter and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
– Let warm water drip overnight from a faucet on an outside wall to keep pipes from freezing.
– Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night to prevent frozen pipes and reduce strain on your furnace during extreme cold.
